Catopezera, The Sound of Colors.

The exhibition catalog.

This catalog exhibits oil paintings by Mônica Mendes and lyrics by Tino Gomes. Catopezera: The Sound of Colors is a collection of 22 oil paintings that commemorate a traditional Brazilian celebration known as “Catope”, a ritual of folkloric expression influenced by African culture that has been in existence in the state of Minas Gerais for over 160 years. It came from the Congada, that is also an old tradition from Minas Gerais. Tino Gomes, who is a Catopê in the “Suit” of Nossa Senhora do Rosário of Mestre Zanza, joined the artist Mônica Mendes to produce the work “CATOPEZERA O SOM DAS CORES”, a mixture of canvases that she paints with music created by Tino Gomes. All themes are inspired by the most popular party in the north of Minas Gerais, “As Festas de Agosto”, which is popularly called “Festa dos Catopês”.
